This is all very interesting - much potential in keeping, or increasing involvement of the new/casual player.
Something else to consider . . .
In another game I played (for only a week), a player earned a bonus if there were at least 10 hours in between logins, and a slightly larger bonus if there were at least 20 hours in between.
If implemented in KoB, this could take form in an extra lamp, or CF hour, 10% morale-rate increase for 2 hours, whatever. Of course the length of time in between logins could be whatever was thought best.
The point is: offer some mild help to the more casual, or beginning, player - help them make up (a bit) for their lost time. Or even think of it as an incentive to not be constantly active, kicking everybody's butt at all hours of the day.
